Getting Around: Metro has 20+ lines and is cheap (¥3-10). Get a Shanghai Yikatong transit card or use the Metro Daduhui QR scanner. Didi (Chinese Uber) works with Alipay / WeChat.
Payments: Cash is rare. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival and link your foreign card. Major hotels accept Visa/MC, but small vendors don't.
Connectivity: Google Maps doesn't work — install Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps. Use Baidu's English version for navigation. Grab an eSIM with internet access to use Google, WhatsApp, etc.
Languages: Mandarin dominates; younger staff in hotels and Western restaurants may speak some English. Have your destination written in Chinese characters or show it on a map app.
Visa: Most nationalities need a visa. Citizens of many countries can transit without one through the 144-hour (or 24-hour) visa-free policy — bring your passport and onward ticket.
